Tips to keep you safe on the roads this winter
Winter has well and truly arrived this week. Defrosting the windscreen is becoming
one of our least favourite jobs in the morning! Here are a few short tips to keep
you safe on the roads this winter. Share them with family and friends!
1. Check your tyres
Check the tyre pressure and thread depth of your tyres. The minimum
legal thread depth is 1.6mm but change them before they get
worn. If you are uncertain please don’t avoid the issue, ask your local
garage to check them out.
2. Beware of black Ice
Black ice is one of winters biggest hazards. Beware of sheltered areas on the
road as they are high risk zones. Don’t use cruise control in icy conditions
and most importantly, slow down.
3. Completely de-fog and de-ice your windscreen
Driving in poor visibility increases your risk of having an accident. Give
yourself plenty of time to allow the windows and mirrors to clear before
you begin your journey. Use warm water as boiling water may crack
your windscreen.
4. Safe driving distance
In the winter months it is really important to increase your stopping
distance while driving. Whether you are driving to work or doing the
school run please be aware of ice on the roads. In the evening there
may not be ice but the roads are very slippy at the moment.
5. Use your lights
Use dipped headlights during the day to ensure you are seen by other
motorists. Check all lights to ensure they are in working order.
6. List of essential for your vehicle
- High visibility vest
- De-icing equipment
- Spare wheel
- Tow rope
- A hazard warning triangle
- Footwear – Have a pair of boots in your vehicle incase you need to leave your vehicle.
- First aid kit
