Please Read: Important Information for All Motor Trade & Motor Fleet Policyholders

‌The Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI), Insurance Ireland and Irish based insurers have worked together to create a central insurance database, which is known as the “Irish Motor Insurance Database” (IMID).

This central database is designed to help identify the insurance status of all vehicles and will be used by the MIBI, the Department of Transport and An Garda Síochána. This database will ensure compliance with the EU Motor Directive(s), the Road Traffic and Roads Bill (2021). This legislation will be enforced by An Garda Síochána. The objective of this database is to reduce the number of uninsured vehicles on Irish roads.

What this means for you

All Motor Fleet and Motor Trade policyholders will be required to provide the registration numbers for each of the vehicles insured under their Fleet or Motor Trade policy within 14 days of a vehicle being added, provided that the vehicle(s) will remain in the fleet for more than 14 days. You are also required to update the database where vehicles are removed from the fleet, if they are to remain off the policy for over 14 days.

The legislation places direct obligations on the policyholder to supply up to date and accurate information to the NFD. You can do this through their NFD login listed below.

Why is this information important?

These new legislative requirements in the Road Traffic Act will mean that fleet owners and motor traders who do not provide the required information will commit an offence, and will be liable, to a Class C fine of up to €2,500 on summary conviction in the District Court. In addition, a policyholder may have their vehicle seized by An Garda Síochána, if the vehicle is believed to be uninsured.

The Irish Motor Insurance Database” (IMID) is comprised of data from two separate databases, the Motor Third Party Liability (MTPL) database (which contains data on private motor & small commercial policies) and the National Fleet Database (NFD) (which will contain data on fleet and motor trade policies).

The data is collected by the MIBI as set out in Section 78A of the Road Traffic Act and the Road Traffic and Roads Bill (2021).

How do I upload my information?

The MIBI has a designated website to allow vehicle registrations to be uploaded to the NFD by policyholders. Visit https://nfd.mtpl.ie/ to register to get access to the NFD. Users must input their policy number and fleet Unique Identifier (UID) as part of the registration process. Please contact your Business Insurance Advisor to receive your Unique Identifier. If you receive a registration error on the website, please ensure that the UID and Policy Number is correct by contacting your Advisor.

Once registered, you can upload vehicle registrations individually on the NFD or use an Excel template (available from the help section) to upload a larger number of vehicles.

Please note that only one person can register on the NFD from each organisation (fleet or motor trader); however, once registered, this person can set up additional users who can update the list of vehicle on the NFD.

It is the responsibility of the policyholder to ensure compliance with the National Fleet Database it is not the responsibility of your broker or insurer. We recommend that you start the process as soon as possible
