In this employee spotlight, Teresa shares her journey in the financial services industry, revealing what initially attracted her to this field and how she skillfully manages to balance her professional duties with her academic pursuits.
How did you start your career in Financial Services?
I began my career as an apprentice Financial Advisor at a small, family-run brokerage, where I gained comprehensive, hands-on experience across all facets of financial advice. While working full-time, I pursued and completed an Honours Bachelor Degree in Business in Insurance Practice (Life), which is uniquely the only Level 8 degree in Ireland dedicated to Financial Planning. Following this, I transitioned to a role at a bank to gain insight into product production. However, this experience ultimately reinforced my passion for working within a brokerage firm. It is in this setting that I can provide high-quality, unbiased advice through a thorough market analysis, ensuring that I offer my clients the most suitable products at competitive prices.
Can you share some insights into the specific areas of finance you are currently studying and how they complement your role at Gallagher?
I am currently pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning, which serves as the gateway to becoming a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), the highest designation available to Financial Planners worldwide. I am nearing the completion of modules 4 and 5, with only one module remaining, which I plan to complete by September. Through this programme, I have already earned several Level 9 designations, including Retirement Planning Advisor (RPA) and Financial Planning Risk Advisor (FPRA). By May, I anticipate adding the Specialist Investment Advisor (SIA) designation to my credentials.
Currently, I am studying Tax and Estate Planning and Specialist Investment Planning. These modules are highly relevant to my role, as they enhance my understanding of various taxation strategies and how to effectively minimize tax liabilities for clients both during their lifetime and when transferring assets to their estate. This knowledge is crucial in comprehensive financial planning, impacting clients throughout their lives. Additionally, the investment module has honed my skills in market analysis and portfolio construction, allowing me to tailor investment strategies to align with each client’s unique circumstances and risk tolerance.
How do you balance your professional responsibilities with your academic commitments?
Effective time management is crucial for me, as I attend live lectures every Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Fortunately, the course content is highly relevant to my professional life, allowing my work to complement my studies seamlessly. I am committed to continually expanding my knowledge of market trends and industry developments to enhance the service I provide to my clients. Attending conferences and various Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses further enriches my learning experience.
While I do dedicate additional hours outside of work to my studies, my passion for the field makes this an enjoyable pursuit. I make efficient use of my time, whether by listening to Bloomberg radio or financial podcasts during commutes to client meetings, all of which contribute to my academic progress. In my leisure time, I engage in personal research, often reading the latest articles from renowned financial journals or books on investing.
To maintain a balanced work-life-study routine, I ensure I stay on top of the course material each week. This approach prevents last-minute cramming and minimizes any impact on my professional responsibilities. By consistently dedicating small amounts of time each day to my studies, I effectively manage my commitments and continue to grow in my field.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering a career in financial consulting?
Embrace every learning opportunity that comes your way, as knowledge is a powerful asset, especially in our dynamic industry. With knowledge comes the confidence to provide the best advice. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance and collaborate with your colleagues; the support I receive from my team is invaluable, and I strive to reciprocate that support. Networking is essential – engage with as many industry professionals as possible and learn from their experiences.
Approach each client interaction with the care and consideration you would extend to a family member. By doing so, you ensure that you are delivering the highest quality advice and service
What is new in 2025 in the Financial Services area?
Significant changes are on the horizon for 2025, with some already in effect, such as the new limits on employer contributions to PRSAs. While there are still opportunities to manage a PRSA alongside an Executive Arrangement, obtaining high-quality advice is now more crucial than ever to determine the most tax-efficient strategies for employers contributing to employee pensions. This is particularly vital for company directors.
Additionally, the introduction of Auto Enrolment pensions is expected later this year. While I welcome this initiative as it encourages early retirement planning, it’s important to recognise that it may not be the optimal solution for everyone. Therefore, seeking professional financial advice to explore all available options is essential.
